This week, we are thrilled to share a tangible win that brings our mission of food sovereignty directly into the neighborhood!

We are deeply excited to announce that SoLA Food Cooperative has been awarded $5,000 in funding by the Office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell. We want to extend our deepest thanks to the Supervisor and her team for recognizing the importance of this work and for their support in bringing fresh, nutritious food access to the Second District.

Color Me Healthy, Color Me Strong

This funding will directly support our upcoming intergenerational workshop series, Color Me Healthy, Color Me Strong. We believe that food is a tool for liberation, and this program is designed to make that belief a practical, daily reality for families in our community.

Workshop Agenda:

  • Guided Garden Tours & Urban Agriculture: Introducing participants to local food-growing practices and sustainable urban gardening at Good Earth Community Garden.

  • Youth Art Programming & Nutrition Education: Partnering with a professional artist to help children create engaging "vegetable portraits" that reinforce nutrition education in an age-appropriate way.

  • Cooperative Economics & Member Resources: Hosting an interactive discussion on how collective ownership and food systems education are critical tools for building long-term food sovereignty.

  • Direct Food Access & Seedling Giveaways: Providing free produce bags to offset immediate household food costs, alongside seedling giveaways and growing instructions from master gardeners so families can grow healthy food at home.

We Want Your Help to Build This

This program has the potential to be designed by you! We are looking for member-owners who are passionate about education, community organizing, and urban gardening to help us plan and produce this event. Whether you want to help with event logistics, outreach to your neighbors, or assisting with the workshop flow, we would love to have your hands on deck. If you are interested in getting involved, please sign up to volunteer.

Moving Forward Together

This grant is a vital step in our work to dismantle food apartheid in South Los Angeles. By providing culturally relevant nutrition education and pathways to food self-sufficiency, we are not just addressing a gap in access; we are building the long-term knowledge and agency of our member-owners. Thank you for your continued support as we build this foundation, piece by piece.

We look forward to seeing many of you in the garden soon!
