FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions About the SoLA Food Co-op

What is the SoLA Food Co-op?

The SoLA Food Co-op is a natural foods grocery store.

What makes the SoLA Food Co-op different than any other grocery store?

The difference is that SoLA is a cooperative, otherwise known as co-op.

What’s a cooperative, or a co-op?

A cooperative, or a co-op, is a business organization owned and operated by a group of individuals for their mutual benefit. The owners are usually referred to as members of the co-op. In other words, the members who shop at the co-op will own the SoLA Food Co-op.

Is membership required to shop at SoLA Food Co-op?

No, membership is not a requirement just to shop at the co-op.  Anyone can shop there, just like at your average grocery store.

What are the benefits of becoming a member of a co-op?

Members can enjoy many benefits, including discounts, private promotional sales only available to members, year-end profit sharing dividends and, perhaps most importantly, a voice in how the co-op is run and what products and services it offers. Members elect the Board of Directors.

Can I become an owner and a member of the SoLA Food Co-op?

Yes, anyone can become  an owner/member of the SoLA Food Co-op.

Who makes up the Board of Directors?

The Board of Directors is elected from among the member owners. They will serve a term for a set period of time and act as the main communication link between the owner members.

Do I have to live in South LA to join?

No. We anticipate our members will come from all over LA, and beyond, to enjoy the great value that SoLA Food Co-op will offer.

How much does it cost to join the co-op?

Our lifetime memberships will soon be offered at the competitive rate of $200.  Payment installments will be available to those who prefer that option.  Join us now by clicking here.

What kind of products will the SoLA Food Co-op carry?

The SoLA Food Co-op will focus on products that benefit the health and well being of its members, the community, and the world. This means that the focus will be on organic, non-GMO (genetically modified) food that is sourced locally. It will also carry products and foods that are produced in an ecologically sound manner by companies that follow fair trade and fair labor practices. From start to finish, the SoLA Food Co-op will seek to make sure its customers feel great about everything they purchase.

As a member, will I save money by shopping at the food co-op?

The savings enjoyed by shopping at the SoLA Food Co-op will come in many forms. This could include discounts, sale prices and year-end dividends offered to anyone who becomes a member. The goal of the Co-op is to ensure that our products and services are competitively priced. This would mean that shoppers would also find savings in fuel and time that otherwise would have been spent having to travel outside of the community to find comparable products.

When will the SoLA Food Co-op open?

Based on the information shared by other successful co-ops, it takes from 2 to 5 years to open a co-op grocery store.  The SoLA project launched summer 2011, and with all the help flowing in from our local community, we could open even sooner than expected.
